“… Tis writ on earth, on leaf and flower:
Love hath one race, one realm, one power.
Dear God! how great, how good Thou art
To heal humanity’s sore heart; — …” (Poems, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 22:12)
This message is for every heart touched by the Comforter — and especially for those who may be feeling the call to express that Comforter more fully through the sacred ministry of Christian Science nursing. As you read, we invite you to listen to how this healing work might be unfolding as a next step in your own discipleship, and how this ministry upholds the divine purpose of comforting, healing, and loving humanity. Further expressing this sentiment is this from the Christian Science textbook: “If we would open their prison doors for the sick, we must fi rst learn to bind up the broken-hearted.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 366:30-31)
As adherents of the teachings of the Comforter and as members of The Mother
Church we each embrace and express the qualities of Mother-Love — the purest form of love. Our obedience to the Bylaws in the Manual of The Mother Church and our study of the Comforter, makes it natural for us all to express nursing qualities in some measure — compassion, patience, encouragement, and so on.
Our Leader writes: “Beloved children, the world has need of you, — and more as
children than as men and women: it needs your innocence, unselfi shness, faithful affection, uncontaminated lives…. What grander ambition is there than to maintain in yourselves what Jesus loved, and to know that your example, more than words, makes morals for mankind!”
(Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mary Baker Eddy,p. 110:4–7, 9)

“Ask God to give thee skill
In comfort’s art:
That thou may’st consecrated be
And set apart
Unto a life of sympathy.
For heavy is the weight of ill
In every heart;
And comforters are needed much
Of Christlike touch. “
